President Trump’s landslide victory on November 5th positions the rogue California British royals at the center of controversy as speculations swirl considering their visa status and security under a new Administration.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have a verifiably strained relationship with President-Elect Donald J. Trump, with the Duchess formerly referring to him as, “divisive” and "misogynistic".
Trump has formerly referred to the Duchess of Sussex's comments towards him as as, “Nasty” , "not a fan of Meghan" and that he thinks Prince Harry is “whipped”. Just this week the 47th President’s son, Eric Trump, shared that “no one cares what happens to Harry and Meghan” in an interview with the Daily Mail.
The timing could not be worse for Harry and Meghan as the Prince's US visa is under scrutiny after he admitted to using cocaine, marijuana and psychedelics in interviews earlier this year as well as in his autobiography Spare. This comes in direct violation of his Visa application stating he was not partaking in these entertainments to be granted a US visa. Eyebrows were raised about if any special privileges were dealt to him based off his status as a Prince, leading The Heritage Foundation to enact a Freedom of Information Request earlier this year investigating the Prince’s status. This case has since been buried and the results privatized.
President-elect Trump was serving as the 45th President at the time of Meghan and Harry's “freedom flight” to California at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, so its unlikely they are a high priority of change again for this incoming administration. However, at a conference in February, Trump alluded to this move and shared he feels that the Biden Administration has been “too gracious” to the couple, adding in an interview with the Express that, “I wouldn’t protect him. He betrayed the Queen. That’s unforgivable. He would be on his own if it was down to me.” What protection under the new Trump administration looks like for the Sussex’s remains to be seen.
Trump’s relationship with the late Queen Elizabeth II was mentioned in his statement to the Express, and is speculated to be one of the drivers of his frustration with Prince Harry. Previously, Trump has discussed his deep love of the Queen and the bond they shared speculating that he was her, “favorite President”. The disrespect Harry has shown to his grandmother and the entire Institution in the blow-back of him stepping down from Royal duties is likely to fuel Trump’s next moves with the couple.
The Duke and Duchess’ recent investment of a new home in Portugal nods to a potential decision to transition out of the US due to these challenges, which may help them with the visa troubles but not their business ventures. As Meghan ventures into the tenth month of silence about her brand, American Riviera Orchard, which follows the fourth trademark denial for the platform, things aren’t looking up.
This is certainly a story that will continue to unfold publicly, as President-elect Trump and Meghan Markle are two of the most talked about and polarizing figures in the media today.
Excitingly, the election of President-elect Trump again means we will likely see another US and UK State visit in the coming years, which is a feast for our eyes of fashion, diplomacy, and nostalgia-- this time, sans the Sussexes.
