After facing criticism for wearing archival pieces, the media mogul goes "Royal" for a night with a risky ensemble opposite of the late princess' style.
Media Mogul and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian was spotted over the weekend wearing another archival piece from her latest passion of collecting pop-culture items. Famously, Kim scandalously wore Marilyn Monroe’s 1962, “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress to the 2022 Met Gala, leaving possible damage.
This time, she arrived at the LACMA gala on November 2nd wearing Princess Diana’s cross necklace that was purchased last year for $197,453 at Sotheby's auction.
Paired with a deep cut to her belly-button white Gucci dress and several other jewel-encrusted bands, the “Atallah” pendant was centrally positioned in the risque look. This was quite the opposite styling of its original owner, who wore it in 1987 to a charity event dressed in a Victorian velvet Catherine Walker dress in shades of purple.
Princess Diana’s cross necklace was made by the same designer as her famous sapphire engagement ring that now belongs to Princess Catherine.
This “sexy” spin of Princess Diana’s jewelry is a great example of the elegance principle of sustainability, but not nearly on target for the elegance principle of subtraction. With a little more coverage up front, The Kardashians star might have made this iconic pendant part of an iconic elegance look, but we will never know for sure.
Princess Diana’s daughter-in-law, Meghan Markle, is rumored to be partnering with the Kardashians on the launch of her personal brand, American Riviera Orchard, if she can ever get it trademarked and launched after 8 months of silence. Meghan's mother Doria was snapped with Kim and Kris at a charity event in 2023, initiating speculation about Meghan's ties to the famous reality TV family.
Kim Kardashian’s mother and manager, Kris Jenner, was also one of the few A-list recipients to feature Meghan’s jars of jam on a short run campaign for her new brand over the summer. Perhaps we will be seeing more of a Kardashians and Markle crossover in time, both finding relevance and revenue off the name of Princess Diana.
Royal fans and readers are left horrified at Kim Kardashian's rendition of Princess Diana's look, calling it "vulgar", "out of touch" and "narcissistic" online. Assuming Meghan partners with the Kardashians again, her PR success may be short-lived.
